Frequently asked questions
Why is forest school the right choice for my child?
We believe in the power of nature to nurture the whole child—socially, emotionally, and academically. In a world dominated by screens and indoor activities, our outdoor environment offers a refreshing opportunity for young children to build a lasting connection with nature.
Research shows that nature-based learning leads to healthier, more confident children. At Buttonbush, kids are more physically active, forming habits that last a lifetime. Time outdoors reduces anxiety, boosts self-esteem, and fosters resilience. Through hands-on exploration and creative problem-solving, our students develop essential skills for today’s world—all while having fun and creating unforgettable childhood memories.
Enrolling your child at Buttonbush Forest School is more than just a step toward education; it’s an investment in their future. We’re committed to helping your child grow in a safe, supportive environment where learning and play go hand in hand.
Are you really outside all of the time? What if the weather is bad?
At Buttonbush Forest School, we love the motto: "There's no bad weather, only bad clothing choices." Our all-outdoor program embraces Michigan's changing seasons, from sunny days to snowy adventures. Children will spend most of their time outside, with a cozy cabin available for occasional warming breaks. When you enroll, we'll provide a comprehensive clothing and gear guide to ensure your child is comfortable, protected, and ready to explore nature's playground.
However, if conditions become unsafe—like extreme cold, high winds, or lightning—students will be moved to a safe indoor location and families will be notified immediately. We're committed to ensuring your child’s experience is safe, fun, and full of wonder, no matter the weather.
How do you handle safety and accidents?
The health and safety of our students is our top priority. Our teachers are trained in First Aid and CPR, equipped with cell phones and first aid kits, and maintain a low teacher-to-student ratio to ensure close supervision at all times. In the event of an accident, a full report will be made, and caregivers will be notified promptly.
Children who spend time outdoors are actually less likely to injure themselves than those with limited outdoor play. By engaging in nature-based activities, children practice real-life risk assessment, develop essential motor skills, and learn their physical limits—skills that build self-awareness and promote lifelong safety in the outdoors.
Our staff play a critical role in ensuring that risky play remains both enriching and safe. We carefully assess play environments, provide appropriate supervision, and guide children in evaluating risks while allowing them the freedom to explore. Staff are trained to recognize the difference between acceptable risk and hazards, stepping in only when necessary to prevent serious harm. By supporting and facilitating safe risky play, we empower children to develop essential life skills in a secure and nurturing environment.
Where will my child go to the bathroom?
We provide a small, private, portable toileting area for children and we have scheduled bathroom breaks throughout the day. Our teachers are here to assist and guide them as they learn to use the system, and we always have extra clothes on hand in case of an accident!
For all programs, children must be potty trained. This means they should be able to communicate when they need to use the bathroom and hold it until a teacher can help them get there. Please reach out if you have any questions about this policy as we may be willing to work out a plan for your family’s needs.
